During the 1960s, four major brands got into an intense competition over creating the first automatic chronograph wristwatch. Heuer and Breitling collaborated and received the support of Hamilton, Buren, and Dubois-Depraz, while Zenith and Seiko decided to go their own way. By early 1969 all four companies had come up with a chronograph wristwatch that featured automatic winding. The Caliber 11 from Heuer, the 6139 from Seiko, and Zenith’s El Primero all proved to be incredible movements and have each inspired a diverse line-up of respective successors.
The watch on offer here is one of those successors.
The El Primero Captain Chronograph represents a dressier reinterpretation of the original concept. Unlike the usual El Primero-equipped watch, it doesn’t have a tachymeter or a rotating bezel and chooses to forgo most traditional El Primero design staples. The black dial’s design draws from the 60s rather than the 70s and features applied steel dagger indices and hands. While the case isn’t all that different from those of other El Primero chronographs, its flat pushers and thinner crown make for a much more refined look. On the wrist, the watch exudes class and sophistication, and its thin leather strap means it will easily fit under most cuffs.
The El Primero Captain Chronograph is powered by the cal. 400B El Primero – as much a workhorse as it is a thing of beauty.
Our offering is in excellent condition, has only a few very hard to spot hairpins and shows only some wear on the strap. Comes in a full set of boxes and papers.
Covered by a limited warranty of 1 year, starting on the date of purchase.
All our watches undergo a thorough inspection and are sold in fully-authentic condition. Naturally, this includes all external and internal components. They are also serviced where needed and tested for waterproofness where it applies.
Vintage watches are checked against our database of original examples to ensure no components have been replaced or tampered with over the years, and they are serviced using strictly OEM parts. It’s no secret that most vintage watches sold online are re-dialed, overpolished, or feature movement parts with questionable origins, and those are all practices we sincerely abhor.
You can rest assured that any exceptions to the above will be disclosed in the respective timepiece’s descriptive text.
