The first G-Shock ever developed looked surprisingly similar to the one on offer here. In fact, it looked about the same. That watch – the DW5000C – made its debut in 1983 and marked the triumph of CASIO engineer Kikuo Ibe over the law of gravity. In the years since then, that durable timepiece has given rise to a diverse line-up of successors that have brought a wide array of revolutionary features to the G-Shock formula. As the culmination of 40 years of progress, the MRG-B5000 truly takes that formula to the next level.
As a departure from the monoblock architecture widely associated with the g-shock, here the bezel alone consists of 25 separate components, each individually finished for a remarkably detailed look. Beneath the Multi-guard Structure, a set of flat springs and silicone buffers ensure optimal shock absorption.
The case is fashioned from Ti64-based super-hard titanium alloy, while a special titanium alloy three times harder than pure titanium, DAT55G, makes up the bracelet. The bezel utilizes CASIO’s proprietary cobalt-chrome alloy COBARION, a cobalt-chrome alloy four times harder than pure titanium that lends the watch a shiny metallic accent. All three of them owe their polished sheen to the diamond-like carbon coating that covers them. As for the display – the brick pattern around it is more than mere decoration – it’s the solar cell for the module inside, the 3501 Tough. Functions include Tough Solar power, Multi-Band 6 automatic radio wave time adjustment, world time, stopwatch (24 hours, 1/100-second first hour, 1-second after first hour), countdown timer (24 hours, 1-second setting units), 5 alarms with 1 snooze, hourly time signal, 12/24-hour format, button tone on/off and power saving mode. Oh, and an awesome adjustable 2 or 4-second cyan Super Illuminator LED backlight afterglow.
