Cartier – dubbed “King of Jewelers, Jeweler of Kings” – was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, who in 1899 handed the company down to his three sons. After they had established it internationally, they turned their attention to watchmaking, for which they had long harbored a passion. Today, many of the creations crafted under the brotherly trio’s stewardship are considered iconic. These include the Santos (1904) – one of the first wristwatches – the Tortue (1912), and the Tank (1919).
Just like the aforementioned timepieces, The Calibre de Cartier Diver showcases the brand’s unique approach to watchmaking that is doubtlessly informed by its background in making jewellery. And in this tired genre of watches supposedly built for exploring the depths of the sea and the ocean, it feels like a breath – no, a lung-full – of fresh air.
Instead of banking on safe cliches, the W7100055 reinvigorates the world of divers’ watches by doing things its own way. Its dial is reminiscent of the brand’s early creations and is more akin to that of a stylish dress watch, while the beautifully-shaped case is adorned with a fine hairline finish and incorporates a golden bejeweled crown and bezel. The cherry on top rests atop the latter – a striking inwardly-slanted ceramic insert as iridescent as a gemstone.
However, despite its eye-pleasing aesthetics, the Calibre de Cartier Diver remains a fully-functional diving instrument. Its dial, even with its dapper style, is peerlessly legible in any condition thanks to its generous luminous indices and sword hands, and the beautiful-yet-sturdy case provides water resistance down to 300 meters.
Inside, protected by the solid caseback, the Cartier Calibre 1904-PS MC is ticking gently away. The PS in the calibre’s name stands for Petite Secondes, and the MC stands for Manufacture Cartier. The in-house movement boasts a power reserve of 48 hours, operates at 28,800 vph, and features 27 jewels.
