Breitling SuperOcean Steelfish 44 X-Plus ref. A1739010/G591 Creamy White dial – Full set, Polished & Serviced in 2021

Aviation has long been the core focus of Breitling’s marketing, and rightly so. Not only is the Navitimer one of the most influential pilot’s watches ever conceived, but its release in 1952 marked the beginning of the brand’s long-standing relationship with the aviation industry. It also gave rize to a long line of successors, which have, over the years, solidified Breitling’s standing in both the pilot’s watch space and the industry in general. The piece on offer here, however, harkens back to a different chapter of Breitling’s history – one that runs alongside the other, stretching all the way back from 1957 and the release of the 48 mm ref. 1004 and ref. 807 SuperOcean.
The SuperOcean Steelfish is also a chunky watch, no doubt about that, but then again, a diamеter of 44 mm and a thickness of 15 mm isn’t really considered all that big in our day and age. Plus, there’s quite a bit of functionality tucked away in that appealing case to make up for any excess bulk. For one thing, it is water resistant down to staggering 2000 meters/6600 feet! It’s also proportionally dust and shock resistant and quite versatile in pretty much all regards, including style-wise. Of course, the iconic bezel endemic to the ‘Breitling sportswatch’ makes an expected appearance, framing a silver dial adroned with applied Roman numeral and luminous dot indices. Once again, they serve a very practical purpose, but their aesthethic contribution is equally significant, lending this timepiece a decidedly tactical, military-sort-of vibe.
