Breitling SA was founded in 1884 by Lèon Breitling – a passionate and innovative watchmaker. In 1915, barely a year after he had passed, his son, Gaston, launched one of the world’s first wrist chronographs with a separate push-piece above the crown, proving that he had inherited his father’s pioneering spirit. The innovations continued well into the 1940’s and in 1952 – with Willy Breitling in the driver’s (or rather pilot’s) seat – the iconic Navitimer made its debut. It was equipped with the flight-specific slide rule that was introduced with the Chronomat, which made it very popular among pilots, airlines, and aircraft manufacturers and cemented the company’s legacy.
When it was launched in 2010, the Chronospace was a highly-accurate quartz watch, but Breitling heeded popular demand and, in 2011, released the Professional Chronospace Automatic. Judging by the one on offer here, that was an excellent decision on their part. The digital displays that once plagued the dial have made way for three handsome sub-dials, courtesy of Breitling’s cal. B23, which give the watch a distinctly classic look; a look further emphasized by the cambered sapphire crystal. The rectangular applied indices appear rather aggressive at first glance, but their brilliant glow more than makes up for that. The stainless steel case is very finely brushed and has a clean, classy design, which the screw-down crown and old-fashioned pushers nicely complement. The bidirectional slide-rule bezel is very satisfying to work with, clicking gently yet palpably across all of its 120 positions. It is entirely unique to the Chronospace line. As mentioned, the watch is powered by the cal. B23, which is built upon the Valjoux 7753.
