Introduced in 1995, the Breitling Emergency was originally intended as a supplement to an aircraft’s locator beacon. At first, due to the potential for misuse, the FCC ruled it could only be sold to licensed pilots, but Breitling soon made it available to anyone willing to sign a contract accepting liability for beacon activation outside of emergencies. Before production of the watch had ceased, the brand had sold over 40,000 units, reportedly helping save over 20 lives.
The version on offer here is the last iteration of the original Emergency.
The ref. E76321 sports a 43 mm titanium case topped by a rotating compass bezel and is outfitted with a comfy rubber strap. It comes in a plastic briefcase complete with a large warning label and a test module used to ensure that the emergency beacon is functioning. An instructional VHS tape is also included in the set, together with an instructional booklet and a rubberized screwdriver. In addition to the emergency transmitter, the watch features an analog/digital display with dual timezone, alarm, chronograph, 24 hour count-down time, and perpetual calendar complications. The Antenna, secured by a plastic tie to the case, can be unscrewed to activate the beacon. Please note that the latter isn’t operational as the 121.5 Mhz frequency is no longer used for emergency purposes. The Emergency ref. E76321 is powered by the Breitling caliber B76, a COSC-certified thermocompensated SuperQuartz chronograph movement.
