Introduced in 1995, the Breitling Emergency was originally intended as a supplement to an aircraft’s locator beacon. At first, due to the potential for misuse, the FCC ruled it could only be sold to licensed pilots, but Breitling soon made it available to anyone willing to sign a contract accepting liability for beacon activation outside of emergencies. Before production of the watch had ceased, the brand had sold over 40,000 units, reportedly helping save over 20 lives.
The version on offer here is one of the last iterations of the original Emergency.
The ref. E56321 sports a 43 mm titanium case topped by a rotating compass bezel, and it is outfitted with a bracelet that continues the case’s delicate satin finish. In addition to the emergency transmitter, the watch features an analog/digital display with dual timezone, alarm, chronograph, 24-hour count-down time, and perpetual calendar complications. The Antenna, secured by a plastic tie to the case, can be unscrewed to activate the beacon, which operates at the emergency 121.5 Mhz frequency.
The Emergency ref. E56321 is powered by the Breitling cal. B56 – a COSC-certified quartz movement.
