Breitling SA was founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling – a passionate and innovative watchmaker known for his sharp business sense. In 1915 – barely a year after he had passed – his son, Gaston, proved he had inherited his father’s pioneering spirit by introducing one of the first-ever wrist chronographs with a separate push-piece above the crown. The brand’s innovations continued well into the 1940s, and in 1952 – with Willy Breitling in the driver’s (or rather pilot’s) seat – the Navitimer made its debut. The model proved extremely popular among pilots, airlines, and aircraft manufacturers and would later go on to define the brand’s avionic legacy. This legacy, however, predates the Navitimer, tracing its origins all the way back to 1941 and the introduction of the Chronomat – the first watch to feature the slide-rule bezel that would catapult the Navitimer into stardom.
The Chronomat B01 Chronograph honors the design of its ancient predecessor while at the same time reinventing itself as a thoroughly contemporary timepiece. It measures a balanced 42 mm in diameter, features a striking sun-ray panda dial, and incorporates many of the brand’s iconic elements, such as the distinct rider bezel tabs and the eye-catching Rouleaux bracelet. The latter perfectly encapsulates Breitling’s retro-design, modern-construction philosophy, and its finish complements the blend of finely brushed surfaces, beveled edges, and mirror-polished details seen on the case. It also makes for one heck of a comfortable fit.
Inside, proudly displayed by the transparent caseback, Breitling’s very own cal. B01 is tirelessly hammering away. It was inspected by our in-house watchmaker and found to be ticking per spec.
