Breitling SA was founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling – a passionate and innovative watchmaker known for his sharp business sense. In 1915 – barely a year after he had passed – his son, Gaston, proved he had inherited his father’s pioneering spirit by introducing one of the first-ever wrist chronographs with a separate push-piece above the crown. The brand’s innovations continued well into the 1940s, and in 1952 – with Willy Breitling in the driver’s (or rather pilot’s) seat – the Navitimer made its debut. The iconic model proved extremely popular among pilots, airlines, and aircraft manufacturers, and it would later go on to signify the beginning of Breitling’s avionic legacy. The watch on offer here – ref. XB1210E4/BE89 – is an extension of that legacy.
Unveiled at Baselworld 2017, the Breitling Avenger Hurricane Volcano Black stole the show with its distinctive all-black color palette and fierce demeanor. The watch, which measures 50 mm in diameter, owes its color to the patented Breitlight – a special composite material that is three times lighter than titanium, six times lighter than steel, and considerably harder than both of them. One would think that, at this size, the Volcano Black would wear too big or too heavy, but it fits even the smaller-wristed among us quite well. The dial features yellow accents that complement the strap and a legible stencil-inspired font, which reflects the military inspiration behind the model. Features include 30-minute and 12-hour counters, running seconds, and a date display at 4 o’clock. Тhe Volcano Black is limited to 1000 pieces, which ranks it among the most exclusive timepieces made by Breitling.
