The history of Breguet spans four centuries and is so rich in inventions and innovations that it represents a substantial part of the entire history of Swiss watchmaking. Thanks to watches such as the one on offer here, it’s quite easy to appreciate why the brand is widely regarded as one of the most important manufacturers in Haute Horologerie.
The Breguet Marine Chronograph features a mirror-polished 42 mm straight-lugged case fashioned out of 18k Rose Gold and topped by a similarly-finished bezel. The dial is presented in a dark-rhodium grey and is also made of solid 18k gold (covered in silver), but its color contrasts the warm luster of the case, and so does the waved guilloché motif at its center. The applied rose-gold Roman numeral indices sit atop a grey satin-finished ring, with luminous pips guiding the polished Breguet-style hands through them. Gently disrupting the dial’s symmetry, the sub-dial for the seconds is located at 9 o’clock, while the date display and circular month indicator are located at 6 o’clock. Somewhat unusually, both the chronograph minutes and chronograph hands are centrally mounted.
Inside, proudly showcased by the sapphire caseback, the Breguet caliber 583Q/1 automatic – a 24-jewel straight-line lever escapement movement that operates at 28.800 VpH and boasts a power reserve of 48 hours – is ticking confidently away. Naturally, this marvel of Swiss horological engineering was manufactured entirely in-house.
