A worthy addition to the Royal Oak family, the Offshore Diver made its debut in 2012 under reference 15703ST.OO.A002CA.01. It almost immediately caught on amongst AP collectors, establishing itself simultaneously as the entry-level option (as weird as that sounds in this context) and a one-watch-collection type of timepiece.
It incorporates all the essential Royal Oak design staples – which, of course, trace their origins to the visionary Gerald Genta – but presents them in a more restrained manner. The Mega Tappeserie dial, for example – while just as reality-defyingly flawless – is a little subtler, a little less loud than those of other models. Its broad hands and applied indices are fashioned out of white gold, which assures that its bright luster will not fade with the passage of time. The iconic octagonal bezel, meanwhile, comes in vertically brushed stainless steel instead of black ceramic, which brings the watch closer to the look of the original 1971 Royal Oak. The rest of the case is also covered in a fine brushed finish that, together with its numerous beveled edges and polished details, tastefully softens its 4-dimensional presence. As befits a diver of this pedigree, the watch comes equipped with a comfy integrated rubber strap.
Tucked away behind the safety of the solid caseback, the brilliant in-house cal. 3120 is ticking confidently away. While many collectors prefer the newer version of this model because of its exhibition caseback, we ourselves are partial to this older reference as we feel that the solid caseback suits the tool watch-esque vibe of the model.
