A worthy successor to the legacy of its older Royal Oak brother, the Offshore Chronograph is an experience that is hard to put into words – and that’s a good thing. Much like its predecessor, the model represents an intense yearning for the future, but it nevertheless looks to the past, to the rich history it is part of, with the highest respect.
The first Ref. 25721ST – nicknamed “The Beast” due to its staggering proportions – made its debut in the 1990s and it was way ahead of its time. Other than its size, what makes it appear so contemporary is its rare dial texture known as the “Clous de Paris Petite Tapisserie”. The latter serves as the backdrop for a set of glimmering white-gold indices and baton hands illuminated with SuperLumi-Nova.
The case’s complex geometry and satin finish give it a four-dimensional presence, which its beveled edges expertly soften. The pushers and screw-down crown are clad in dark-blue Therban – the name given by AP to their proprietary rubber-like elastomer material. Of course, the integrated bracelet’s finish mirrors that of the case – including the beveled edges – while its tapered silhouette complements it geometrically and ensures a snug wearing experience.
