A worthy successor to the legacy of its older Royal Oak brother, the Offshore Chronograph is an experience that is hard to put into words – and that’s a good thing. Much like its predecessor, the model represents an intense yearning for the future, but it nevertheless looks to the past, to the rich history it is part of, with the highest respect.
Тhis Limited Edition Royal Oak was introduced in 2007 and is dedicated to the Geneva-based Alinghi sailing team – winner of the 2003 America Cup – who AP supported throughout the 2000s. It is one of the first watches to incorporate a forged carbon bezel, which complements the lustrous 18k rose gold underneath. The precious-metal case measures 44 mm in diameter and follows the familiar architecture of the Royal Oak, with the addition of guards for the pushers and crown. The latter is also fashioned from forged carbon, as are the pushers that control the fly-back chronograph – a feature included here specifically for use in regattas. The dial showcases the emblematic Méga Tapisserie dial at the center but also features several aesthetic flourishes that harken to the eponymous team, such as the red logo at 3 o’clock and the subdial hands. The purpose of the added aperture, in case you’re wоndering, is to indicate the minutes left till the skipper of a yacht is allowed to cross the starting line.
Inside, behind the commemorative caseback, the remarkable 50-jewel in-house caliber 2326/2848 is calmly ticking.
