Designed by the legendary Gerald Genta, the Royal Oak is an experience that is hard to put into words – and that’s a good thing. Due to the limitations of photographic reproduction, however, we’re obliged to give it a try.
As it should be obvious, the watch on offer here – ref. 15300OR.OO.D002CR.01 – has been meticulously toiled over until the very essence of perfection was attained. Every surface, seen or unseen, has received the utmost care and attention, resulting in a level of finishing that challenges perception. The Grande Tappisserie dial defies reality with its flawless details and expert craftsmanship, and so do its gold indices and hands, which shine brightly against the dark backdrop. The complex geometry of the 18k Rose Gold case and bezel, meanwhile, gives the watch a four-dimensional presence, which its numerous beveled edges and delicately brushed exterior expertly soften. The cherry on top would have to be the integrated choco-brown leather strap – it complements the watch in both color and texture and ties its elements together beautifully. It also makes for a very comfortable wearing experience.
At the center of it all is the cal. 3120, which seems to come alive when wound, evoking the image of an angelic engine. Unsurprisingly, the decorated rotor that the caseback so proudly displays is also fashioned from solid 18k gold.
